History

People all over the world watched when civilization as we knew it was changed by a small group of terrorists on September 11, 2001. Sheela Murthy and Vasant Nayak felt they had to do something. It was a response that came naturally. Sheela’s father regularly reminded her that the good fortune of their modest circumstances could easily have been bestowed upon a poorer girl, and her poverty could have been theirs to bear. Vasant’s father was a doctor for UNICEF. Doing for others was an example set daily. The couple established a foundation that would offer help in and around Baltimore, their adopted home; and in India, the country of their birth. Over the years, the groups and causes regularly receiving funds became partners, and helped the foundation to define itself, its mission, and its goals.
